Move with your memories! Make your college transition crafty with the new KODAK MOMENTS App

From Summer 2015 intern: Laura Meyers

As the summer winds down the realization that I need to begin preparing to head back to St. Bonaventure University has set in. The summers in between college years can be a difficult time, especially for someone who loves a steady routine like myself. It’s hard to adjust to a completely different lifestyle for a few short months, only to have to move back to your college dormitory or apartment in the fall.

My summer months seemed even more exciting this year than in the past. They were full of concerts, lake days, camping trips and weddings. Having such an eventful time made it that much harder to pack up my shorts and tank tops and begin looking at textbooks online.

Bringing a little piece of home back to college with me has always made the transition easier. I’ve done my best to document my summer fun with photos of my friends and family. However, I always tend to end up with an iPhone camera roll containing 1,000+ pictures, but never actually doing anything with those memories.

Instead of keeping these summer photos trapped in my phone, I decided to use the new KODAK MOMENTS App to bring them to life. I wanted to be able to easily create something to put in my bedroom at school to keep my Rochester friends and family close with me while I’m away.

Simple prints really never go out of style. They add décor to any college bedroom while simultaneously showing off the most important people in your life. I was able to order prints of my summer memories in seconds right from my phone with the KODAK MOMENTS App.

As sad as it is to say goodbye to the summer, it’s also exciting to see my college friends again. I especially miss my roommates while I’m home, so I wanted to make them a little welcome back present for our house. We aren’t the most creative of girls and we often joke about the lack of decoration in our home. I knew they would love something to spice up our living room and I knew the KODAK MOMENTS App would help make this possible.

Once again, it was incredibly easy to order prints for my project from my phone and I was able to edit my photos right in the app. I’m not a professional photographer by any means, so many of my photos needed to be cropped or have red-eye removed. The new app made this a simple step in the process.

After selecting my photos and completing my edits, I was even able to use the app to  immediately choose the closest location to pick up my prints!

Once I had my prints I decided to check out the Kodak Tips & Projects Center for some inspiration. There are so many interesting project ideas to choose from, and they don’t involve a lot of time and effort to complete (even for an uncreative soul like myself).

After looking through hundreds of awesome projects, I found one that seemed perfect to bring back to school with me. I chose to print out a large poster size image of my college house and place it in an old frame. From there I used wire to hang the prints of my roommates over the image of my home. I love this project because it allows me to update the photos easily by swapping them out with new ones my roommates and I take throughout the year.

This process wasn’t time-consuming or expensive at all, and it ended up turning out exactly how I wanted it to!

I can’t wait to show my housemates how crafty I can be, and I know they’ll love the new décor. I’m also excited to hang up the photos I printed of my family and friends from this summer. I’m so glad I was able to use the new KODAK MOMENTS App to make my transition back to college easier and more fun.

You can download KODAK MOMENTS App for iOS or Android.

CameraAce puts a fresh spin on mobile picture management and sharing

Sometimes the built in mobile camera just isn’t cutting it. When it comes to taking pictures on a mobile device you not only want some technology behind the lens, you want options.

The app market has become so saturated with photography apps that it can be near impossible to find one that will retouch your images just right. Even with so much competition, the company TecAce has produced one of Android’s most popular and highly rated photography apps called CameraAce.

Since I couldn’t say it any better than the app itself, “CameraAce is a sleek, edgy, and elegant way to create and share impressive slideshows as well as perfect your picture collection.” CameraAce allows you to create photo collections with themes and effects of your choice and you can even share all your moments in a slideshow.

Also, CameraAce is partnered with Kodak Alaris, which means enhancing your photos and getting prints all happens from the familiarity and comfort of your android device.

You can either take photos and organize them yourself or preselect the theme (gallery) for the photos you are about to take.

Cool Features:

  • CameraAce offers more filter affects than I’ve ever seen on a photography app. There is even a before and after feature to see the difference between the original picture and the filter you have selected. The app also has a fun horizontal and vertical flip-flop of photos, which creates a mirror image of the original picture
  • There is a large selection of borders that can be added to photos
  • The app has a very professional feel and is easy to use
  • Fully customize each individual theme or gallery the way you want it
  • I found this to be an interesting touch; the app adds music to your slideshows and you also have the option to add your own music
  • Easily create collages with the collage feature. You simply select pictures from your themes (galleries) and it pulls them together in one image for you. You can even add a border or filter afterwards
  • CameraAce is partnered with Kodak Alaris and allows you to professionally print your images at a local Kodak Picture Kiosk.
  • You select the photos you want printed from your galleries and add them to your cart. You can easily crop the photo, select the quantity of prints you want per photo, select the size of your prints and even select a glossy or boarder glossy finish.  The shopping cart’s cost per photo also updates in real time as you adjust the options on your photos.

CameraAce features photo collection with quick and simple organization to help you share your photos. CameraAce is a great photography app that lets you fully customize and personalize your photos the way you want them.

Printing is Alive and Well by Joe LaBarca

Today’s Wednesday Works comes from Joe LaBarca

On Wednesday Works, we’ve discussed topics relevant to both the retail and professional photography industry. While we’ve talked about how as an industry we can drive printing, just as important as driving printing is the media on which you print.

First, why so much discussion of printing when some say printing is dead?  If you look at the statistics of number of pictures printed and compare to the number of pictures captured, it’s a very logical assumption because the number printed is such a low percentage.  However, let’s go a little deeper to understand why printing in general, and printing on silver halide photographic paper in particular makes so much sense.

In the beginning, there was film, and negative film required a print to be made.  While a seemingly obvious statement, as a result, you could say that 100 percent of images shots became prints. Consumers today still want prints, but they have the choice to print or not to print. So they don’t ask for every print, but rather, the “keepers” that they want to have around for months, years, and generations.  This includes consumer snapshots, as well as professionally captured images from important events such as weddings and school photography. While the amount of prints made today is certainly less than those made during film’s peak years, the number of prints made from digital is growing and the growth is accelerating, according to InfoTrends, in its January 2013 Consumer and Professional Imaging Analysis titled “Road Map 2013: Photo Printing Trends.

So let’s get the math straight – the percentage of images printed is smaller than ever because of the explosion in the number of images captured.  Many in the industry estimate that nearly 400 billion images were captured in 2012.  That’s four times more than the roughly 100 billion from film’s heyday.  And with this number growing the number of images printed will also grow even as the percentage of images printed versus captured continues to decline.  A fast rate in growth of images captured with a slower rate of decline in images printed versus captured, means images printed will grow.  And this growth could mean that prints from digital might actually meet or exceed the number of images printed during film’s peak in the not too distant future.  Bottom line: a very small percentage of a very large number is still a very large number.

So, as a professional photographer or a professional lab, how will you print this growing number of digital images?  Knowing that people want the “keepers,” as a professional lab or a professional photographer, you should consider what paper would ensure that these images last a lifetime. While there are many choices in digital printing technology, KODAK PROFESSIONAL ENDURA Premier Paper, is optimized specifically for digital printing and reflects the newest emulsion and dispersion/dye technologies to provide further improvements in an ongoing stream of benefits to the labs and the consumers. A technical paper presented to the International Symposium on Technologies for Digital Photo Fulfillment provides the technical specs of ENDURA Premier, as well as the benefits of this silver halide paper to both wedding/portrait and commercial labs. Among those benefits: the latest in efficiencies for high speed, low cost digital printing, providing consumers with greater color gamut and improved image quality. At the same time, the paper maintains the critical characteristics of excellent flesh tone reproduction and all-around image longevity that, in my opinion, simply cannot be matched by any of the other digital print technologies available today to professional labs and their clients.

Your local animal shelter probably has many adorable, cuddly little guys like these already. You should contact them and adopt one today. And of course, always spay and neuter your animals.)
