Kodak's Social Media Representative in Germany
Starting last week, the long awaited Kodak Zi8 Digital Video Camera became available in Germany. It was announced on July 29th and since that day I have received hundreds of requests from bloggers and podcasters via mail, twitter and facebook, who could not wait to test this new gadget.
With the first 20 test units available in Germany, we wanted to do something special. So we invited the most important German bloggers and podcasters to the FLOATING HOME, a luxurious houseboat with anchorage in the City Sport Harbor in Hamburg. The futuristic architecture of the floating event location is surrounded by an all-around glass front, which offers a fascinating view over the Hamburg harbor and the city - just perfect for video filming with the new Kodak Zi8.
For this workshop we also needed an expert on board. So I called Alexander Franz Köllner aka @iFranz, who is a well known German video podcaster and won the German podcaster award in 2007. Alex has already tested the new Zi8 as well as the other Kodak Digital Video Cameras Zi6 and Zx1 and has filmed several videos for his video blog iFranz.tv. Another perfect coincidence was that Jeffrey Hayzlett was on his European tour that week. He is actively involved in social media and loved the opportunity to get to know the German blogger scene, listen to their opinions and get their direct feedback.
To reach out to as many well known bloggers and podcasters as possible @iFranz and Christian Otto Stelter aka @_Refugee_ created a video invitation prior to the event :
On the event day at 6.00 PM sharp the Floating Home was packed with 20 bloggers and podcasters. Kodak's Jeffrey Hayzlett as well as Kees Mulder, Director Marketing Centre & Sales Operations, Ralf Werner, Senior Product Manager Pocket Video Cameras & New Devices and myself attended the Floating-Cast.
The bloggers really appreciated the opportunity to discuss the Kodak products and to get first hand information about how the company is utilizing social media as important part of their general marketing activities to build closer relationships with customers.
After the interviews iFranz gave a detailed introduction into the product features and advantages of the Zi8 for filming video podcasts compared to competitor products, which initiated a lively discussion with the participants.
The workshop ended with a session by Tom Siegmund, who showed speech practices and mouth exercises for perfect articulation that bloggers could do prior to filming a video podcast. Everyone had a lot of fun with this part - especially doing the funny faces.
The night ended with everyone sitting together, eating the last muffins of the buffet and talking about the Zi8, Kodak as a brand as well as the usage of social media. Jeffrey Hazylett gained some laughter by stating that he would love to be a blogger, because then he could wear everything he wanted - referring to the surfing shorts of one of the bloggers - and that he was not sure if he wanted to "move out" of the Floating Home again.
Looking at the numerous positive blog posts we achieved so far the "Floating-Cast with iFranz and Jeff" was a great success: Sven Wiesner was so impressed by Jeff's coolness, he even named him the "Chuck Norris of all Marketing officers" in his blog the next day.
So far 9 blog posts appeared about the Floating-Cast with iFranz and Jeff:
The participants not only filmed numerous videos but also documented every little detail on still images. To collect all the photos in one place we created the flickr-group "Floatingcast", where 258 images were uploaded to date by 15 group members.
According to Jeff, the Hamburg event will be hard to top - but we are looking forward to do so anyway ;-)!
