Introducing... the Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera!

Jenny Cisney
Chief Blogger, kodak.com
Finally, it is the 29th of July and I can talk about the new Kodak Zi8 Pocket Video Camera! If you saw this blog post last week, you know I have been looking forward to posting about this latest product. Here are those same videos now without the BEEPS and blurrrs.

Now you know why I was so excited about this pocket video camera! It has so many features people have been asking for!

The Kodak Zi8 still has...

a swing out USB arm, but now it's flexible
removable batteries, now a lithium-ion battery that can be charged in or out of the camera
an SD card slot - so you can bring extra cards and keep on shooting
large 2.5" color LCD

but throw in...
EXTERNAL MICROPHONE JACK!!!
full HD 1080p video capture
built in electronic image stabilization
5MP still capture
improved low light performance
smart face tracking technology

The Kodak Zi8 will be available September 2009 for $179.95.

So how does the Kodak Zi8 compare to the Zx1? Check out whatZareyou.kodak.com to see which one would work best for you.

Comment: Hi - just bought the Zi8 last night and my wife shot the first video this afternoon. It was 25 seconds long and the file size was 40 MB. Is this right? Am I doing something wrong? I'm fearing if shoot something 8-9 mins long it will never load to youtube or facebook. Any suggestions???

Comment: Jenny, I won the Zi8 in your contest. Having problems with Audio quality. Volume switches from one speaker to the other during the video. I wore and external mic connected to Zi8. In my first YouTube video http://bit.ly/1QWWXS sound quality went down in volume. I could not edit to improve quality of sound or can I? Also wanted to add 6-8 seconds of music at beginning and end. Software did not allow for that it seemed. Where do I go for help? PS Thank you again for the Win a Zi8 contest. I will use the video for my website too. I am a professional speaker and know this will help me grow my business.

Comment: I also want to purchase one of these, but am worried about the high-pitched noise issues - what can you tell us about that?

Response: I sent you a note. - KodakAprille

Comment: I've seen many comments from purchasers about a high-pitched whine when recording with the built-in mic. Also heard one example from a video recorded with the Zi8. Does Kodak have anything to say about this? I'm very interested in the camera, but this could be a deal breaker.

Response: Martin- can you send me a note offline? connect@kodak.com

Comment: Suggested name for Zi8: My EyeZ

Posted By: Robert de Garavilla (8/23/2009)
Comment: A great name for the Zi8 would be "z scope" or Z scope 8" some meanings of scope are "watcher, mark, aim, free outlook, distance, range of view, activity, an instrument for viewing and observing.

Comment: Hi, I will definitely buy one when it comes out for my video podcast. We featured Zi8 in our latest episode: http://www.techconclave.com/episode-11-kodak-zi8-the-pirate-bay-in-the-netherlands-final-fantasy-xiv-microsoft-store-twitter-ddos-and-richard-dows/ I just hope that the actual product is not too shaky although the quality of video is rather nice.

Comment: Awesome! It would be super with just the new interfaces and EIS But then you add 1080p ! It is an HD video dream! Will there be possible playback issues with the 1080p file size? I'm using an iMac 24" 3.06 with 4 gig ram. I love that you use H.264 in your cameras. No codec clowning in iMovie - a perfect match!

Comment: Jenny, who is the PR rep responsible for handling Zi8 inquiries? I have a TV show on the AMGTV network called Explore World TV and I do Technology reports. Please have a look at the site.

Comment: Great looking camera. I think you hit the bulls-eye with the new features. Those videos are ridiculous though (no offense). They're probably doing more harm than good.

Comment: Jenny, my name is Chaz Rough and I am the host of the YOGAmazing Video Podcast. It currently has 9 million downloads and is the most downloaded yoga podcast in iTunes. I own the zi6 and used it an episode titled, Yoga in a Hotel room. I would like to promo the Zi8 in an upcoming episode to a global audience. Who do I speak with on this Cross Promotional PR/Marketing opportunity? Thanks, Chaz

Comment: I got an email saying Someone replied to my comment, but I don't see the reply here... anyway yes I'm aware you can PRE order it on amazon for SEPT, but I want it nooow! For the beach in August! And yes I meant the software is difficult to use. For example, Zi6 offers 60fps slomo record - but try to figure out how to upload a vid so it plays in slomo...

Comment: Any word on how much memory this thing will have, I am sure that HD video takes quite a bit.

Response: the great thing about the Zi8 is that it takes an SD memory card. You can use up to a 32GB memory card! That's almost 10 hours of HD video.

Comment: I've used the Zi6 with great success on my blog and will love upgrading to get an external mic. I posted some questions in a comment on your prior post... mainly, how can we get one for August!? Also is the software upgraded? I couldnt figure out how to do a slo-mo upload and no instructions/support...?

Response: The Zi8 is now available for pre-order at http://www.kodak.com/go/zi8 Do you mean the editing software that comes with the camera?

Comment: We are a not for profit youth media organization that produces a weekly tv show shown in 67 cities and 4500 colleges. Our students have been using the FlipVIdeoHD to video blog but now we would love to try out this fabulous camera and perhaps switch to this one.

Response: We have a team that review requests such as these. You can send me a proposal to jennifer.cisney@kodak.com
