Love, Innovation, and Fruit Flies

Thomas Hoehn
Director, Brand Communications and New Media

Love and fruit flies... huh?! Let me explain...

At this time of year, Rochester's area orchards are full of ripe fruit and the population of bees and fruit flies increase. A swarm of these fruit flies have found their way into the kodak.com area at Kodak HQ! Jill Bird, a member of the Site Operations team, explained the situation to her husband Jim. Jim is a clever and resourceful engineer who works at Kodak Park, our manufacturing center here in Rochester, NY.

As Jill describes it, she heard strange noises coming from her basement last night while Jim was tinkering around. Later he came up the stairs with an invention to help with the fruit fly situation. Using a clunky rotary thing-a-ma-bob from an old Kodak prototype, he crafted a machine he dubbed "The Fruit Fly Flattener." After 32 years of marriage if that isn't love I don't know what is!

We are unsure if patents will be pursued at this time but will keep you posted. Certainly someone in Business Research has a spreadsheet tracking the results by now - Thwack!!

Comment: For the people that think this is "time wasted", I must say it actually is "Mental excersise". It does for your brain the same a Gym can do for your muscles. Practice "thinking" once in a while and you won't grow "brain fat" :-)

Comment: You know, I've been teaching about Benjamin Franklin's inventions in American Literature class for several years without being able to imagine how his rocking chair that swatted flies might have worked. Suddenly, I'm able to envision it.

Comment: it will only take one survivor of this this beautiful construction to crawl its way back to the nest for the entire fruit fly colony to know about it. and then its time for the good olde NAPALM, again.

Comment: Good work, not many people can do stuff like that any more, they prefer their quasi anonymous relationship with the outside world to exude only negativity, the brave souls, don't know if I'd be brave enough ... Thanks for sharing

Comment: Who is worse?Someone who makes fly traps or someone who spends time reading about makeing fly traps and then leaving critical remarks about someone writing about making flytraps? People that leave hypocritical comments on blogs, "Life, Get A."

Comment: Great job man! Assuming the picture can attact the flies...if not then the vinegar thing mentioned before. Also, perhaps making some sort of grate might make cleaning easier...

Comment: Gee, no wonder Kodak is having troubles. This guy should spend more time working and less time blogging. See also "Life, Get A".

Comment: "don't have a crappy mac to watch the video" Nor the wherewithal to download Quicktime for Windows.

Comment: Hey Von Skippy,I have a mac, and the video works just fine.

Comment: "YouTube can figure out a browser independent format" Yeah, they totally figured out flash.

Comment: i prefer the use of an RPG- simply aim in the general direction of the flies, press the trigger... no more flies annoying the shite out of you.simple.

Comment: Have no mac either. works perfectly on my pc. Vonmoron, you be da' idiot.

Posted By: Kirri (9/13/2006)
Comment: This is ingenious! If I wasn't so damn lazy I'd make one. It'd be hell to clean up though.

Posted By: Ed (9/12/2006)
Comment: Yo Von Skippy, I don't have a mac but I can see the video. Maybe you don't know how to work your computer?

Posted By: wbeaty (9/12/2006)
Comment: Lol! Use fruit leather as bait? My own version works better: a jar with a hole in the lid and a bannana peel inside. It magically sucks up all the fruit flies in the entire house. Place finger on hole, carry outdoors, empty it.

Comment: No clue - don't have a crappy mac to watch the video. Funny, YouTube can figure out a browser independent format, but Kodak can't - gee, wonder if they understand that film is a dead end too????

Comment: So as it's set up now it kills pictures of fruit flies?

Posted By: wendy (9/12/2006)
Comment: we have one in taiwan. it's stick-like (around 30 cm) with tassels at both ends, hanged horizontally over the foods. when powered on, it spins and the plastic tassels flies. it's widely used in traditional markets.

Comment: you guys sure are innovative.

Comment: This is pure genius - a simple idea that works well. Perhaps he could create a water-powered version that uses the current of a stream to zap the mosquitoes while you are fishing :-)

Comment: I LOVE it! LOL...

Comment: To really make this work, put a bowl of vinegar under a flat but air-permeable surface (like a piece of plastic with holes in it) under the plane that the swatter lands on. Vinegar attracts fruit flies.
